Texas, Our Texas!

It's March, and here in Texas we celebrate Texas Independence Day on March 2nd.  Our study of all things Texas falls in March.  One of the main people that Kindergarten students are required to learn about is Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas".  Many (most) kindergarten students have never even heard of him!  I use a powerpoint that I adapted from the Texas Law Related Education website. We thoroughly discuss Stephen F. Austin and compare his life to our life now.  I created a Sequencing activity on Stephen F. Austin that helps solidify the learning from the powerpoint.

We also focus on drawing a picture of Stephen F. Austin.  I do not pretend to be a portrait artist.  I never have been good at drawing people, but most of the time Kindergarten students think their teachers are great at just about everything. Taking the students through a step by step drawing does seem to help them focus on differences in clothing and in hairstyles from then and now.  They also are impressed with their own drawings when they finish.  They are so proud of their drawings that they then rush home to tell their parents about Stephen F. Austin.
